When translated to Czech, the word Bohemia literally means “Czechia”

Its derived from both the term Boli- from the largest celt group that habited the region, and by the term Boheme (meaning God) given to the followers of Jan Hus who was burned as a heretic in the 14th century.

The region finds its borders with Austria and Bavaria on the west and the Moravian region on the east. It encompasses Prague as a central city, and a diverse variety of landscapes.

Bohemia is geographically marked by rolling hills, slow moving rivers, stately baroque palaces and fairy tale forests.

Historically speaking Bohemians have always been pulled to nature, as is evidenced in the art, music and folklore. A fascination with botany is present even today, as syrups, dried herbs and tea’s are used to treat any and all ailments.

The countryside was ruled by nymphs and deities, as portrayed in Antonin Dvorak’s famous opera “Rusalka” or Krakonoš- the mountain sprite that patrolled the borders in the  Krkonoše mountain range.

Under Austro-Hungarian rule, the Czech culture quietly burned, despite distain from its more opulent neighbours. The countryside, so abundant with deer and wild game, set the stage to aristocratic hunting parties. Central Bohemia- Pardubice in particular - became known for their horse culture, breeding both elite sport horses and the Kladruber carriage horses. Today the Pardubice steeplechase course remains one of the most prestigious in the world, and the Kladruber horses can be found in various royal stables around the world.

Today the folklore and old world customs are enjoying a revival, despite contest from the americas, accessible via social media and glamourized by Hollywood.
